AI Boom Shifts Focus of Crypto Firms Away from Bitcoin Investment

Bitcoin, much like AI systems, depends on extensive networks of robust computers located in data centers. Operating without a central governing body, these computers play a crucial role in verifying transactions and are compensated with newly minted digital coins.

However, recent trends show a decline in rewards and a drop in coin values over the past year. At its peak in October 2025, the price of one Bitcoin soared to approximately $124,000 (around £91,000), but it has since experienced a significant downturn.

Recently, Bitcoin has made a modest recovery, trading around $80,000, marking an increase of nearly 30% just in August. Nevertheless, for companies that have transitioned away from cryptocurrency, this resurgence may not be enough to entice them back, as the costs associated with reversing such operational changes can be substantial.

Industry experts suggest that many Bitcoin mining firms are now shifting their focus towards AI technologies. These companies, having honed their skills in securing low-cost electricity and effectively managing large data centers, are well-positioned to make this transition.

Among those making this pivot are notable entities such as TerraWulf, Ionic Digital, Core Scientific, Iris Energy, Bitdeer, Riot Platforms, and Hut 8. A significant example is Riot Platforms, which recently entered into a monumental $9 billion, 20-year computing agreement with Anthropic.

Editor’s Take

This shift from Bitcoin mining to AI development highlights a broader trend in technology. As firms adapt to changing market conditions, their ability to repurpose existing infrastructure for AI could revitalise their business models. For users and developers, this could lead to enhanced AI-powered products and services that leverage previously underutilized computing capacities.
