Neoclouds: Lesser-Known Firms Raise Concerns About Potential AI Bubble Burst

The emergence of neocloud companies, many of which trace their origins back to the unpredictable world of cryptocurrency mining, is unfolding against a backdrop of significant technological evolution. These firms typically operate the same type of physical infrastructure that was initially designed for cryptocurrency generation, such as Bitcoin.

CoreWeave, established in 2017, initially focused on mining Ethereum. Other companies like IREN, Core Scientific, and Applied Digital also began their journeys in the crypto mining sector. Their existing infrastructure positioned them advantageously when the demand for artificial intelligence surged in 2022, following the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI.

An exception in this landscape is Nebius, which transformed from Yandex NV—the Russian counterpart of Google—to its current name in 2024 after a separation from its parent company.

The fate of these neocloud companies now significantly depends on the trajectories of major AI players and hyperscalers, including larger data center operators that often play crucial roles as customers. Melissa Otto, head of Visible Alpha Research at S&P Global, emphasized the ongoing financial influx, commenting, “There is just an enormous amount of spending getting injected into the system. It’s an arms race.”

Despite their growth, neocloud firms face a heightened financial risk, as noted by Charlie Dai, VP and principal analyst at Forrester. He pointed out that shifts in spending strategies from major tech clients could heavily impact their stability.

Recent forecasts from tech giants Microsoft and Google indicated lower levels of anticipated spending on AI than what analysts had predicted, causing stock prices of multiple neocloud firms to decline sharply.

Looking ahead, much depends on companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which are expected to enter the public markets soon. Should AI face a downturn—being labeled a bubble—neocloud firms will likely bear substantial collateral damage, warns Bradley Tusk of Tusk Ventures.

Editor’s Take

This development highlights the precarious balancing act that neocloud firms must undertake as they navigate their origins in cryptocurrency and their current roles in the AI landscape. The potential for declining investments in AI could pose significant challenges, making it essential for these companies to diversify and adapt. Users, businesses, and developers will need to stay informed as these dynamics evolve, ensuring that their strategies align with industry trends.
