Apple CEO: The Company Aims for Purposeful AI Development, Not Just Innovation

In a recent discussion with Wired’s Steven Levy, Apple’s CEO John Ternus shared insights into the company’s stance on artificial intelligence.

Over the last few years, Apple has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors in the AI field, particularly highlighted by the delayed launch of an enhanced version of Siri, which finally made its debut this summer. During the interview, Ternus, who took over as CEO in early September, acknowledged the varied opinions surrounding Apple’s AI efforts, yet emphasized his contentment with the company’s current trajectory, stating, “I really like where we’re at.”

Ternus asserted that Apple is committed to integrating AI into future products but clarified that the company aims to avoid implementing AI features just for the sake of it. He explained, “When we’re doing it right, people won’t have to think about whether it was AI that made this happen or more traditional software. What matters is, did we build something that they really love?”

When pressed by Levy on the potential for AI to revolutionize the Apple ecosystem—possibly rendering traditional applications obsolete—Ternus reflected, “That could make life really easy, I suppose, but the creation of products is a deeply human and personal thing, something that we love to do.”

Editor’s Take

This discussion underscores Apple’s cautious yet optimistic approach to AI, prioritizing meaningful innovation over mere trends. For users, this could translate into products that enhance user experience without overshadowing their personal touch. As the AI landscape evolves, businesses and developers will need to adapt to these nuanced capabilities, potentially setting new standards in technology integrations.
