OpenAI Seeks $30B Funding Round at $1.25T Valuation Before Upcoming IPO

OpenAI is reportedly in the final stages of securing a substantial round of private funding, opting for this route over proceeding with an initial public offering (IPO). The AI research organization aims to raise approximately $30 billion at an impressive pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, with the investment round led by Coatue and various UAE-based investors, according to sources who spoke with CNBC.

This news follows a similar report from Bloomberg from a month ago, which indicated that OpenAI was in talks to raise $30 billion at a higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Although the specifics of the deal are still under negotiation, both news outlets warn that these figures may change. Furthermore, the potential UAE investment could come hand-in-hand with agreements to enhance OpenAI’s computing capabilities through partnerships in the region. OpenAI has chosen not to comment on these developments.

Achieving such a valuation would position OpenAI as the highest-valued private company to date. This elevated valuation could set new expectations for its eventual IPO. The organization had previously filed confidential documents for an IPO in June, following a significant funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion post-money.

The implications of this high valuation may also extend to Anthropic, which some perceive as being closer to its own IPO. Reports suggest that Anthropic is targeting a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public entry. Earlier this year, Anthropic raised $65 billion at a valuation of $965 billion, which many viewed as its last major fundraising effort before going public. It, too, submitted confidential paperwork in June.

Editor’s Take

The pursuit of a record-breaking valuation by OpenAI reflects the growing confidence and capital flowing into the AI sector. For users and developers, this funding could translate into enhanced tools, improved models, and more robust infrastructure. As the competitive landscape intensifies, both OpenAI and Anthropic’s movements signal the evolving dynamics of AI commercialization and its impact on innovation.
