YouTube Confirms No Plans to Test Removal of Dislike Button Feature
YouTube has confirmed that it is not currently testing the concealment of the dislike button for users, despite earlier reports and shared screenshots on social media. On Wednesday, a representative from YouTube, Kimberly Taylor, clarified to The Verge that the platform is instead rolling out a new user interface specifically for content creators.
The restructuring will involve relocating the dislike button behind a three-dot menu in the creator’s uploaded videos. However, creators will still have access to their total dislike counts through YouTube Studio, along with enhanced analytics.
Taylor emphasized, “We are not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users. We’re introducing a new UI for creators on their own uploaded videos, where dislike is behind the three-dot menu, and as always, they can find their full dislike counts in Studio, alongside other analytics.”
This update is slated to begin rolling out to creators in the coming weeks. The change comes on the heels of YouTube’s previous adjustments regarding the dislike button. In 2021, the platform decided to hide the public dislike count to reduce harassment of content creators. Additionally, earlier this year, the dislike button was omitted from YouTube Shorts.
Update, October 21st: Context regarding the rollout timing of the new UI has been added.
Editor’s Take
This development is significant as it reflects YouTube’s ongoing efforts to prioritize creator welfare while balancing user interaction. By moving the dislike button, the platform aims to enhance the user experience for creators without removing the transparency and accountability that come with analytics. The implications for community dynamics and content moderation could be substantial, affecting how creators engage with feedback.
