YouTube May Be Testing the Removal of the Dislike Button Feature

YouTube is reportedly experimenting with the placement of its dislike button, as noted by 9to5Google. A number of users on the platform X have shared screenshots indicating that the dislike button has been relocated to a submenu accessible via three dots. Additionally, a Reddit user disclosed an instance where the dislike button was completely absent.

Currently, the dislike button is conveniently positioned next to the like button beneath each video. However, moving it to a submenu would likely complicate the user experience, thereby reducing its accessibility and potentially leading to fewer dislikes being registered.

It remains uncertain how extensive this trial will be, and Google has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the changes.

YouTube has previously demonstrated its propensity to modify user interaction features. In 2021, the platform concealed public dislike counts to curb harassment aimed at creators, though those creators still have access to their dislike counts. Earlier this year, the dislike button was also omitted from YouTube Shorts, with users being directed to alternative functions within the three-dots menu.

Editor’s Take

This potential alteration in YouTube’s interface signals a shift in how user feedback is handled on the platform. By making the dislike button less accessible, YouTube may be prioritizing the experience of creators to avoid negative interactions. For users and developers, this change could reshape user engagement metrics and influence the content creation landscape.
