Southeast Asia’s Digital Economy Projected to Surpass $1 Trillion by 2035

The digital landscape in Southeast Asia is undergoing a transformative shift, spurred by the rapid adoption of generative AI. A recent report highlights that 243 million individuals, representing 58% of the region’s working population, are using AI technologies daily. This uptick is occurring at an astonishing pace—four times faster than the spread of mobile internet.

The 11th edition of the e-Conomy SEA report, released by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, reveals that the digital economy is set to expand significantly, forecasting a year-on-year growth rate of 17%. By 2026, the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) is expected to reach approximately $368 billion, paving the way for the digital economy to exceed the $1 trillion mark by 2035.

AI Integration Across Sectors

This year’s report identifies several key sectors where AI is creating a seismic impact. Starting with e-commerce, the sector is experiencing a remarkable surge with a projected GMV of $226 billion and an 18% YoY growth. Shoppers are increasingly relying on multimodal discovery and in-app assistants, which lead to more personalized experiences and improved conversion rates—higher by 10%—and order volumes that can soar by as much as 75%.

In the realm of online travel, which accounts for a GMV of $59 billion (+10% YoY), generative AI is reshaping how travelers plan their journeys. Traditional search engines still take the lead, but AI has emerged as the second-most used tool for organizing intricate itineraries, surpassing social media platforms.

The online media sector is witnessing a transformative shift too, with revenue expected to hit $44 billion and a staggering 22% growth YoY. AI is enhancing personalized content feeds, driving audience engagement by 10% to 20%, and signaling the rise of commerce media as a $4 billion market.

Future of Mobility and Financial Services

Mobility and food delivery services are also benefiting from AI, presenting a GMV of $40 billion and a 15% YoY increase. Predictive suggestions and smarter routing features significantly enhance user experiences, making transactions more efficient and seamless.

Moreover, the digital financial services domain shows promise, with a Gross Transaction Value (GTV) of $1,650 billion and a 16% increase YoY. Innovations in real-time fraud detection and personalized financial recommendations are now becoming common, alongside Singapore’s emerging leadership in digital wealth platforms.

The Road Ahead

The widespread application of AI across these various sectors not only shapes how businesses operate but also how consumers engage in everyday transactions. New technologies are driving consumer confidence in agentic commerce, which could lead to an extraordinary 60-fold escalation in AI utilization across the region over the next five years. As organizations look to optimize their AI workflows, they might consider platforms that enable them to access leading AI models from one workspace, thereby enhancing efficiency and productivity even further.

As the Southeast Asian digital economy continues its rapid ascent, the integration of generative AI will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in this evolution, setting the stage for unprecedented growth and innovation.
