Elon Musk Confirms Consideration of Tesla-SpaceX Merger
Elon Musk recently expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of merging two of his flagship companies, Tesla and SpaceX, stating that the idea is currently under active consideration. During a call with financial analysts to discuss SpaceX’s quarterly business performance, Musk affirmed, “Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes.”
However, Musk cautioned that the merger is not a foregone conclusion and would require the backing of shareholders. He revealed that both companies have established special committees tasked with exploring the implications of such a merger. “The special committees have not reached agreement on terms of any transaction and there’s no guarantee that they will,” he mentioned. Despite the uncertainty, he highlighted the potential benefits, saying, “I do think there is a lot of merit to merging and a lot to be gained.”
The potential merger is noteworthy given that Tesla carries an estimated valuation of around $1.5 trillion, while SpaceX is valued at approximately $2 trillion. If realized, this merger would be among the largest in corporate history.
Following Musk’s announcement, shares of SpaceX surged by 8% in after-hours trading. The company, known for manufacturing rockets and the Starlink satellite internet service, is also making strides into cloud computing, providing services to tech giants such as Anthropic and Google. This newly ventured business has emerged as SpaceX’s most profitable segment, generating $7.5 billion according to recent financial results. In addition, Starlink achieved revenue of $5.2 billion.
Despite these successes, SpaceX as a whole has not yet turned a profit, reporting a loss of $1.1 billion this year. Meanwhile, shares of Tesla, which will announce its own quarterly results on Wednesday, increased by 2% after a period of slight decline.
In a broader strategy, Musk has been consolidating his various ventures under fewer umbrellas. Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired xAI and X (formerly Twitter), both of which he owned. The recent initiative, Terafab, aimed at chip manufacturing collaboratively between Tesla and SpaceX, further demonstrates Musk’s vision of enhanced collaboration among his companies.
Musk reiterated that a full merger would align well with ongoing projects in chips, artificial intelligence, and software, creating synergies that could significantly enhance both enterprises.
Editor’s Take
The potential merger of Tesla and SpaceX marks a significant moment in the tech and aerospace industries. It could lead to innovative synergies, particularly in AI and technology development. For users and businesses, this may mean enhanced products and services. As both companies push the boundaries of what’s possible, their collaboration could redefine competition in their sectors.
