AMD Launches FSR 4.1 for Xbox Consoles and Handheld Devices
AMD has announced the rollout of its latest upscaling technology, FSR 4.1, which will now be available for Xbox Series S and X consoles, as well as select laptops, 6000-series GPUs, and handheld devices like the Xbox Ally X. Starting today, gamers using Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, along with those utilizing Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series devices, can take advantage of FSR 4.1.
The update, which was initially launched for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards back in March, was promised to expand to older graphics cards and handhelds throughout the year. FSR 4.1 is expected to enhance performance in over 300 supported games, including popular titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
This announcement follows a recent collaboration between Sony and AMD, which introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) technology to the base PS5. Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s computer and graphics division, remarked on the optimization efforts made to enhance the technology further: “We didn’t just bring it over, we made it better. We went back into the model, we tuned it and optimized the code path.”
While users of Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs and devices powered by Gorgon Halo or Strix Halo can access FSR 4.1 immediately with the latest Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 drivers, Xbox console gamers will need to wait a bit longer for the update.
Scott Van Vilet, Xbox’s CTO, expressed the collaborative efforts with AMD to maximize the potential of this technology, providing developers with a powerful tool for enhanced performance and visual fidelity. “Our teams are continuing to work together across hardware and software, and there’s even more ahead with Project Helix, leveraging FSR Diamond to power what comes next,” he stated.
The introduction of FSR 4.1 could significantly influence gaming on Xbox consoles, particularly for the less powerful Xbox Series S. However, neither Microsoft nor AMD has provided a specific timeline for the FSR 4.1 rollout on Xbox, simply indicating it will be “coming soon.”
Editor’s Take
The introduction of FSR 4.1 is a critical step in improving gaming performance across various platforms. For users, especially those on the more modestly powered Xbox Series S, this technology promises a noticeable enhancement in visual quality and performance. For developers, the improved tools will make it easier to deliver high-quality gaming experiences. This advancement not only benefits individual gamers but also promotes a competitive edge in the broader technology and gaming industries.
