Mark Wahlberg Advocates for Ethical AI Use in Film and Embracing AI Clones

Mark Wahlberg Embraces AI’s Role in Filmmaking at TechCrunch Disrupt

Actor and director Mark Wahlberg recently took to the stage at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, discussing the evolving role of artificial intelligence in the film industry. While Hollywood remains polarized on the use of AI in productions, Wahlberg expressed his belief that when used correctly, AI can enhance filmmaking.

Wahlberg, who is also an entrepreneur and investor, shared his vision of possibly using AI to enrich the experience of his upcoming film about Pete Rose, where he is set to portray the title character. “It’s a fairly expensive movie, but we’re talking about utilizing [AI] to enhance the stadium setting and other aspects,” he noted.

The actor emphasized the importance of storytelling in cinema, stating, “I don’t think you should just put an idea into ChatGPT and let it generate an entire script without real actors. AI should serve to enhance the creatives involved, not replace them.”

Reflecting on his career, Wahlberg mentioned his participation in some groundbreaking effects-driven films, such as Jurassic Park and The Perfect Storm. “Those were cutting-edge moments in technology. Currently, while I appreciate visual effects, I prioritize real storytelling over flashy effects,” he asserted.

Wahlberg was asked about his awareness of the CAA Vault, a facility that enables actors to create AI replicas of themselves using advanced scanning technology. Although he hasn’t visited it yet, he expressed openness to the idea. “I would be interested because if this is the future, it would be amazing for my children or grandchildren to manage my likeness and ensure I appear in great projects,” he said.

The star even sees potential in his animated series Ted continuing for years through an AI-generated version of himself. “If I’m no longer around, and if it keeps an audience engaged, it would be fascinating to see how it evolves,” Wahlberg explained, indicating his belief that people should have access to the content they desire.

By acknowledging the technology’s potential to enhance storytelling rather than replace it, he encourages a balanced approach to innovation. This dialogue could pave the way for more creative opportunities, impacting how films are made and consumed in the future.
