By ELIOT FORCE, US News Reporter

A tragic incident unfolded during a livestreamed Mass when a Catholic priest was fatally struck by a large crucifix in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s most populous city.

The accident occurred on Saturday at the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church while Father Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari was broadcasting the service through his personal social media accounts. The catastrophic moment transpired approximately 27 minutes into the stream.

Viewers observed Father Sanchez Molinari at the altar with a crucifix positioned high above him on the wall. Suddenly, the cross loosened, tipping forward and crashing down upon the priest’s head.

The livestream abruptly ended as viewers heard the horrific sounds of shocked parishioners screaming for help. “Padre!” a woman was heard calling frantically, urging someone to “call an ambulance” in Spanish. Several congregants rushed toward the altar to assist.

Father Sanchez Molinari was confirmed dead by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil on the following day.

The statement from the Archdiocese expressed sorrow over the loss, confirming Father Sanchez Molinari’s role as parish priest and referenced his passage to “the Father’s House.” It concluded with a traditional Catholic prayer for the deceased.

The church has not disclosed details regarding the cause of the crucifix’s fall nor whether an investigation will be conducted. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the priest died at the scene or succumbed to his injuries later.

Father Sanchez Molinari was a dedicated member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, which serves underprivileged communities globally. The congregation, established in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, boasts around 4,500 members, predominantly priests.
