Exclusive Preview: Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon A Time in Shaolin Album Now Accessible

Wu-Tang Clan’s elusive album, Once Upon A Time in Shaolin, has long been shrouded in mystery, but fans can now catch a glimpse of its sound. Two snippets from the album were recently shared on the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out, which dedicated an episode to discussing this exclusive record.

The journey of Once Upon A Time in Shaolin is quite intriguing. In 2015, the only existing copy was purchased at auction by the controversial pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli. This unique album is under a unique restriction, preventing its commercial release until the year 2103. After Shkreli had to surrender the album to the U.S. government, it was eventually sold in 2021 to the cryptocurrency art collective PleasrDAO. Since then, the album has been showcased at various special exhibitions.

In a recent collaboration, Pablo Torre Finds Out and PleasrDAO organized a listening event for the album. Among those in attendance was Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, who experienced the album for the first time during this occasion. The podcast captured this moment, including Method Man’s reactions, and listeners can access two snippets from the album at the timestamps 32:30 and 39:02.

When asked for his thoughts on the album, Method Man remarked, “I do not hate this album.”

Editor’s Take

This development offers a rare peek into a historically significant musical work and connects a contemporary audience with an iconic piece of hip-hop history. The ability for listeners to finally access snippets allows for broader discussions around art ownership and accessibility. Such events may set a precedent for how exclusive art forms like music can be experienced in the digital age.
