Deezer Introduces Option to Exclude AI-Generated Music from Playlists

Deezer is making strides to cater to its users’ preferences by developing a new feature that allows them to filter out AI-generated music from their playlists. Announced on Tuesday, the toggle option is set to launch later this year, aiming to enhance the listening experience for those who prefer music created solely by human artists.

Once activated, the toggle will exclude AI-generated tracks, albums, and associated artists from search results, providing users with a cleaner interface focused on human contributions to music. Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, emphasized the company’s responsiveness to user demands, stating, “We’ve seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music.”

This initiative comes in response to a noticeable rise in AI-generated content on the platform, which has prompted the need for such a feature. According to a previous survey, nearly 45% of Deezer users expressed a desire to remove AI music from their feeds.

Last year, the platform introduced AI-detection tools to monitor the volume of AI music uploads, which started at 10% of daily submissions. More recently, the proportion of AI-generated tracks soared to over 50%, with an average of 90,000 new tracks being uploaded each day. This rapid increase highlights the growing impact of AI in the music creation space.

Other music streaming services are also developing their policies concerning AI-generated music. For instance, Bandcamp has outright banned AI tracks, while Tidal has restricted monetization for AI uploads. In contrast, Spotify has opted for a labeling approach, ensuring users are aware of AI content on its platform.

Moreover, reports in August indicated that Apple Music is considering implementing labels for AI-generated tracks by the year’s end. Additionally, users are increasingly relying on independent tracking systems to identify AI music within their playlists.

Editor’s Take

The introduction of a filter for AI-generated music by Deezer reflects the growing concern among users regarding the nature of content they consume. As listener preferences shift, this development signifies a potential turning point for both platforms and musicians. Users will now have greater control over their experience, which may influence how artists adopt AI technologies in their creations while prompting other platforms to consider similar features.
