Epic Games Shifts Focus to AI-Driven Game Development Model
Epic Games is undergoing a transformative shift in its approach to game development in collaboration with the Walt Disney Company. According to a report by Bloomberg, the renowned gaming company is implementing an “AI first” strategy, allowing artificial intelligence models to handle code and artwork creation for an upcoming shooter game.
The internal messages reviewed by Bloomberg indicate that human developers will primarily focus on overseeing AI-generated code and art assets, moving away from traditional hand-written coding and artwork creation. Models like Anthropic’s Claude will be instrumental in this new direction, as the studio embraces a fully AI-integrated workflow.
Initially announced in early 2024, the $1.5 billion partnership between Epic and Disney aimed to produce a shooter themed around the popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, with a planned release for March 2027. However, this project has encountered an indefinite delay, attributed to the ongoing AI integration challenges and slower-than-anticipated development progress.
An Epic spokesperson outlined the company’s commitment to AI-driven development, stating that the initiative will be spearheaded by the studio’s developers, who remain the creative visionaries behind the project.
In a social media statement, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney emphasized the significant transition taking place within the company, suggesting that this pivot is not merely about reducing workforce size but enabling developers to create more and higher-quality content across all teams utilizing the Unreal Engine.

By integrating AI into development processes, Epic aims to streamline workflows and enhance creativity. This change could set a new standard for game development, impacting how future titles are created and expand opportunities for innovation in gameplay and design.
