Man Sentenced to Life for Killing Ex-Partner in Her Home After Targeting Her
A violent offender with multiple convictions has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-partner, just days after his release from prison. Robert Sabat, aged 60, fatally stabbed Dickiesha Nurse in her own home following his early release.
After moving into Ms. Nurse’s residence, Sabat ignored her requests to leave, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation. Authorities discovered Ms. Nurse’s remains during a welfare check, prompting a swift police response. Sabat seemed to take pride in his actions, informing officers that he had previously killed and hinted at plans for further violence.
In court, he received a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years and one month at the Old Bailey. Sabat and Ms. Nurse had known each other since childhood and had been in a four-year relationship before his violent outburst.
At the time of the assault, Sabat was on licence after serving less than half of a 12-month sentence for knife possession and harassment against another former girlfriend. Samantha Carvalho, Ms. Nurse’s younger sister, emphasized in her victim impact statement that Sabat posed a clear danger to the public upon his immediate targeting of her sister after his release.
Judge Sarah Whitehouse described the severe impact of Sabat’s actions, stating, “You have left a permanent and widespread trail of destruction for the family to endure.”
The details surrounding the case reveal that the police were not initially present when Ms. Nurse made distress calls reporting Sabat’s refusal to leave her home. After several alarming incidents, her family raised concerns when they were unable to contact her.
During a welfare check conducted by paramedics, Sabat confronted them while wielding a knife. Subsequent entries into the apartment revealed Ms. Nurse’s body, which showed signs of prolonged suffering prior to her death.
Evidence collected included several knives and a cleaver, and it was reported that Sabat made chilling remarks to police alluding to previous murders. With a background of various offenses dating back to 1987, this incident underscores the dangers posed by repeat offenders.
Previous convictions include assaulting a police officer in 1995 and wounding with intent in 2014, highlighting a troubling pattern of violence that culminated in this latest tragedy.
Editor’s Take
This case raises significant concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts for violent offenders. It illustrates the perennial challenge faced by law enforcement and the justice system in balancing societal protection with rehabilitation. Additionally, the impact of such violence on families and communities cannot be overstated, posing questions about systemic risks that repeat offenders may pose to society.
