British Adventurer Returns Home After 28 Years, Completing 31,000-Mile Journey
A Journey of 28 Years: Karl Bushby Completes His Global Odyssey
Karl Bushby, a British adventurer, recently made headlines by swimming the English Channel, concluding a remarkable 28-year journey that took him across 31,000 miles around the globe. His adventure, which began in November 1998 in Chile, aimed to be the first to completely circumnavigate the world on foot.
After traversing 29 countries, Bushby reached the shores of Shakespeare Beach near Dover on a recent Monday, marking his return to the UK. He is now set to head home to his family in Hull, East Yorkshire, where his extraordinary challenge will come to a close.
Upon his arrival, Bushby expressed his relief, stating, “Feels good to have UK soil under my feet after all these years. It hasn’t been easy, and that’s part of the point. Proving I’m more capable than I give myself credit for. All of us can accomplish more than we will ever imagine.”
His return was celebrated by family and friends, along with renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog, who is creating a feature-length documentary titled ‘Walk of Life’ about Bushby’s journey.
Despite his achievements, the journey was not without obstacles. Bushby encountered difficulties while trying to cross from France to the UK, facing refusal at the Channel Tunnel. Authorities cited safety concerns as the service tunnel was closed, meaning he had to navigate one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. Furthermore, as per a 2018 French order, swimming from France to the UK is prohibited, complicating his crossing efforts.
Fortunately, after obtaining the necessary permissions from both French and UK coast guards, Bushby successfully completed the swim. In addition, last year, he tackled a 186-mile swim across the Caspian Sea to avoid entering Russia or Iran amidst geopolitical tensions.
Throughout his adventure, Bushby overcame various challenges, including navigating the treacherous Dariének Gap between Colombia and Panama, and achieving the feat of walking across the Bering Strait, becoming the first Briton to do so, despite needing to swim during parts of the endeavor.
After 28 years on the road, he faces the final leg of his journey, eagerly anticipated by his mother, Angela, who plans to greet him at their family home. Bushby aims to finish this incredible expedition by November 1.
