Grandfather Injured While Protecting Granddaughters from Newcastle Crowd Incident

A Newcastle grandfather has gained recognition as a hero after he sustained multiple fractures to both legs while saving his granddaughters from an encroaching vehicle.

Dave ‘The Barber’ Martin, well-known among Newcastle Knights fans, was with his granddaughters early Saturday as they awaited the team bus destined for the NRL grand final in Sydney.

Reports indicate that the retired barber was injured after he pushed the girls to safety just moments before a gold BMW collided into the crowd.

The incident involved a young driver with a red P-plate, striking numerous people, including Mr. Martin, two five-year-olds, and a two-year-old child, while another adult sustained a broken collarbone.

Following the accident, Mr. Martin underwent extensive surgery lasting eight hours at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, and he is currently recovering. His granddaughters initially spent the night in the hospital but have since been reported to be in ‘good spirits’ by their family.

The accident occurred at a major intersection in Wallsend, where Mr. Martin operated his barbershop on Nelson Street for years before its recent closure.

In response to community support, Mr. Martin’s daughter, Luce-Mae Martin, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate the family’s financial burden during this trying time, assisting with costs for travel, accommodation, and medical expenses.

The driver, Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, 18, was arrested and has been charged with nine offences linked to the incident, including three counts of dangerous driving that caused grievous bodily harm.

During a court appearance, bail was not granted to Samarasinghe, and he remains in custody, with his next court date set for October 15.

In a recent Instagram video, Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris expressed the community’s ongoing concern for the injured individuals involved in the crash, particularly a five-year-old girl who has now stabilized after being in critical condition.
