Google Explores Walmart’s Flipkart Integration via Gemini and AI Mode in India

Google is currently piloting a new feature aimed at Indian shoppers, enabling them to purchase items directly from Walmart-owned Flipkart through the Gemini platform and its AI Mode. This initiative marks a significant shift as the tech giant seeks to evolve its AI services from mere product discovery to facilitating actual transactions.

During this testing phase, select users can spot a “Buy” button featured on specific Flipkart product listings within Gemini and the AI Mode interface. This option allows them to proceed to a Flipkart checkout process without leaving the AI environment, as reported by sources familiar with the initiative and experiences noted by TechCrunch.

The test is being rolled out to a limited audience and encompasses a small range of products, such as smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. Meanwhile, other users are still presented with standard product listings from Flipkart in Gemini and AI Mode, without the direct purchase functionality.

Plans are in place for a broader rollout later this month, just ahead of India’s festive shopping season, according to insiders.

This move reflects a wider trend among tech giants, including OpenAI, as they integrate commerce capabilities into their AI offerings. They aspire to move from merely answering shopping inquiries to playing an active role in online purchasing.

In response to inquiries about the Flipkart collaboration, a Google spokesperson stated that the company is continuously experimenting with new features to enhance user interactions and business connections. They reiterated that these tests are part of ongoing experiments without further details available at this time.

Additionally, Google has been developing technology to streamline purchases through its AI services. Earlier this year, it introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), designed as an open standard that allows AI assistants to engage with retailers during the shopping experience, including during the checkout process. This protocol aims to facilitate purchases within the Gemini and AI Mode frameworks by utilizing a Google-hosted checkout experience. Notably, UCP has been enhanced to enable shoppers to transfer items to a retailer’s website to complete transactions.

The current Flipkart test seems to differ from the Google-hosted checkout experiences previously showcased, as it leads users to a checkout flow branded by Flipkart itself. The underlying technology for this function remains unspecified.

Recently, Google identified Flipkart as one of the merchants partnering with them to create what they term “agentic” shopping experiences for consumers in India, although details regarding the test and its rollout timeline have yet to be disclosed.

It’s important to note that Google has a financial relationship with Flipkart, having invested approximately $350 million in 2024 as part of a funding round led by a U.S. retailer, giving them a minority stake in the e-commerce platform.

As the second-largest internet market globally, with over a billion users, India sees intense competition between Flipkart and Amazon, especially during the festive season when both companies launch significant sales and promotional campaigns.

At this point, the “Buy” option is not available for all retailers displayed by Google’s AI services. While listings from competitors like Amazon appear alongside Flipkart products, the direct purchase option remains exclusive to this test.

Flipkart has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding this development.

Editor’s Take

This development is pivotal as it signifies a shift in how consumers will interact with AI and e-commerce. By integrating a purchasing option directly into the AI interface, Google and Flipkart are not just simplifying the shopping experience, but also potentially reshaping consumer behavior. This could set a new standard for AI-assisted shopping, encouraging other platforms to explore similar capabilities. Ultimately, it highlights the growing intersection between advanced technology and retail, promising more seamless experiences for users.
