Activision to Develop Next Halo Game Amid Job Cuts at Xbox
Xbox is implementing significant job cuts and altering the production strategy for its iconic Halo franchise as part of an extensive corporate restructuring. This latest phase of layoffs will impact employees at the studio responsible for developing Halo, with the Call of Duty publisher, Activision, poised to take over future game development in the franchise.
Gaming journalist Jez Corden from Windows Central characterized this shift as a “dramatic move,” while industry analyst Christopher Dring raised concerns about whether this strategy could revitalize Xbox’s once-prominent title.
The restructuring efforts also cast uncertainty on the futures of several prominent Xbox studios, including Ninja Theory, known for its acclaimed Hellblade series. In a statement made in July, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma indicated that Ninja Theory would be spun off, together with four other studios, in light of the ongoing downsizing.
In a blog post, Matt Booty, Xbox’s Chief Content Officer, acknowledged that efforts to secure a buyer for Ninja Theory did not succeed as “two separate agreements” fell through. As a result, consultations regarding a potential closure of the studio will commence, although discussions regarding a possible buyout are still in progress.
Among the four other studios affected, three have returned to management, while ongoing discussions for Arcane continue, according to Booty.
The recent announcement of a further 268 job cuts follows a previous disclosure from Sharma in July stating that the company was undergoing the “most significant restructure in Xbox history.” This initiative has already resulted in the elimination of 1,600 jobs, with an overall reduction of 3,600 positions projected.
The company reports that it has achieved three-quarters of its restructuring goals. At that time, Sharma highlighted that Microsoft’s gaming division had been “unhealthy,” despite the value created through its gaming subscription service, Game Pass, which had not scaled rapidly enough.
Additionally, in an August interview with the BBC, Sharma pointed to the financial strain caused by rising computing and hardware costs as another significant external challenge facing the company.
Editor’s Take
This development reflects a critical moment for Xbox as it undergoes substantial transformations to maintain its competitiveness in the gaming industry. The shift in handling its flagship franchise could reshape the gaming landscape, impacting players’ expectations and developer strategies. With significant job losses, the focus now shifts to how this restructuring will influence the future of studio creativity and game development as a whole.
