Volvo Enhances Battery Capacity for 2028 XC60 and XC90 Plug-In Models

Volvo Ups the Ante with Enhanced XC60 and XC90 Plug-in Hybrids

Volvo has unveiled significant updates to its renowned XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid models, featuring improved battery capabilities and production enhancements. The new XC60 T8 is equipped with a net battery capacity of 37.9 kWh (41.2 kWh gross), offering an impressive electric driving range of 78 miles (125 km), as per the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

This electric range is designed to meet the needs of average American drivers, with the typical daily commute estimated at 22 miles (35 km) round-trip. The XC60 T8, when fully charged and fueled, can cover an astounding 590 miles (949 km) before requiring a recharge or refueling—a compelling feature for long-distance travelers.

Production Expansion in the U.S.

In a strategic move to cater to its largest market, Volvo will commence production of the XC60 in South Carolina, in addition to its existing line in Sweden. This shift is a response to the current tariff environment, which favors local manufacturing.

The XC90 Continues to Impress

While the XC90, the brand’s flagship three-row SUV, hasn’t seen as extensive stylistic changes lately, it benefits from updates that enhance its technology. Like the XC60, the XC90 is now outfitted with a new Gemini-enabled infotainment system displayed on an 11.2-inch screen, a feature from its prior refresh. Additionally, the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid also adopts the larger 37.9 kWh battery, providing it with an all-electric range of 73 miles (117 km).

Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized the importance of these models by stating, “The XC60 is our bestselling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey. Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”

Editor’s Take

The enhancements to the XC60 and XC90 reflect Volvo’s commitment to electrification in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. By increasing battery capacity and establishing local production, Volvo is positioning itself to better serve U.S. consumers while addressing timeframe needs for long-range travel. This strategic adjustment not only improves user experience but also aligns with broader trends towards sustainable mobility.
