Reviving Siri: Enhanced Usability in iOS 27 Sparks User Engagement
My usage of Siri has drastically changed with the advent of iOS 27. No longer confined to simple tasks, I now find myself relying on Siri for complex queries and navigating on-screen context.
Siri’s Transformation
Since I began using the public beta of iOS 27, I’ve experienced a significant shift in how I interact with Siri. Unlike previous versions, this update rejuvenates my interest in the assistant, inviting me to explore new capabilities. This is a notable milestone for Apple, considering my previous disillusionment with Siri.
Over the past two years, the introduction of Apple Intelligence hinted at an advanced version of Siri. After enduring several delays, the software update delivers a revamped Siri powered by Google’s Gemini models, making it substantially smarter than its predecessors. This new iteration not only boasts a fresh logo but also features improved animations.
In my explorations, I tested Siri’s prowess by inquiring about various sports-related topics, from World Cup matches to player stats. While earlier developer versions had their share of flaws, this latest version largely proved correct. I was particularly impressed by Siri’s ability to follow complex, multistep instructions. For example, I asked it to compile hidden features of iOS 27 into a note, and it executed the task effectively.
Beyond simple inquiries, Siri can draft and send messages directly. Thanks to its contextual understanding of files, messages, and emails, I could request it to retrieve a specific conversation and generate a returns message accordingly.

Siri’s enhanced context awareness is also noteworthy. I could ask casual questions about the oldest player visible during a match lineup or have it read text aloud when I preferred not to scan. While exploring a startup’s website, I could retrieve information about its funding and competitors with ease.
One of my highlights was browsing coffee lists on Reddit, seamlessly asking Siri to save items to a note. Although I faced minor challenges in ensuring the correct note was selected, simplifying the note’s name resolved the issue.
The integration of Siri with the Camera app enables users to ask questions about what’s in their viewfinder. For instance, while dining out, I inquired about the drink in my hand, and Siri aptly identified it as green juice, before refining its guess to either Jaljeera or Aam Panna when I mentioned the Indian restaurant I was in. I even captured a photo of the restaurant’s sign and asked for menu recommendations.
Additionally, users can photograph coffee bags to get brewing suggestions from Siri.

New in iOS 27 is a dedicated Siri app. Users can revisit previous conversations, customize Siri’s voice and expressiveness through settings, and expect improved compatibility with third-party applications as developers update their apps post-release.
Apple Intelligence
The Apple Intelligence framework enhances various AI functionalities within iOS 27. One notable feature is the Shortcuts creation capability, allowing users to conceptualize shortcuts in natural language. Instead of having to master the mechanics of shortcut creation, you can simply request actions, such as “Show me today’s to-do items every morning at 8 a.m.”
I utilized this feature to create a shortcut for identifying songs I like when I hear them in bars or cafes, integrating Shazam to save the track details along with their locations.
Safari’s new custom alerts enable tracking modifications to webpages, such as blog updates or item price changes. The Photos app has also introduced helpful tools like “reframe” and “extend,” improving image quality in certain instances. Meanwhile, the upgraded eraser functionality significantly reduces artifacts when objects are removed.

The new intelligent suggestion system in iOS 27 enhances user experience. Now, specific messages, like event or location information, prompt smart recommendations to add them to your Calendar or Notes. The Passwords app further simplifies security by automatically changing passwords when logging into sites.
Other Quality-of-Life Improvements
One of my favorite additions is the updated clipboard feature, which allows seamless pasting of various content types across apps. The presence of a “paste from Safari” shortcut on the keyboard streamlines the process, enhancing productivity.

Users can now customize the transparency of Liquid Glass to match individual preferences. This enhanced control allows for a more personalized experience.
Another useful feature is the intelligent network switching functionality, which automatically transitions from Wi-Fi to mobile data when connectivity issues arise. This seamless transition ensures that you can maintain connectivity during important tasks.
The update also emphasizes child safety, implementing a new setup process that identifies essential apps. Parents can establish schedules, set time limits, and control approvals for newly accessed websites. Warnings are issued when children encounter inappropriate content in messaging apps.

While iOS 27 may not include headline-grabbing features aside from Siri AI, it undoubtedly enhances daily convenience. Previously, I often turned to ChatGPT or Gemini for answers, but now I find myself utilizing Siri more frequently, even as I manage my tasks beyond Apple’s core applications.
The update is available for users with iPhone 11 or later and iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later. Users can access the latest version through Settings > General > Software Update.
Editor’s Take
The release of iOS 27 marks a significant evolution in Apple’s Siri, transforming it from a basic assistant to a more versatile tool capable of handling complex requests. This advancement not only enhances user experience but also signifies Apple’s commitment to integrating more intelligent features into their devices, potentially drawing users back into the Apple ecosystem.
As businesses and developers adapt to these changes, they may find new opportunities for innovation and improved interactivity with their applications.
