LG TV Identifies Third-Party Phones and Devices on Local Area Network

LG Electronics is under fire following the revelation of potential privacy issues involving its televisions. A video analysis by the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus, in collaboration with Level1Techs and security experts, suggests that certain LG TVs, including the premium G5 OLED TV, can track users even when powered off.

The investigation revealed alarming findings. According to Steve Burke, the editor-in-chief of Gamers Nexus, “The [G5] crawled our entire network and found dozens of unrelated devices, including smartwatches and phones of our staff who didn’t even know we were working on this.” This behavior raises significant concerns about user privacy and data security.

Gamers Nexus’ video demonstrates the results from Wireshark testing of the LG’s OLED65G3PUA, currently retailing at approximately $2,500.

In promotional materials, LG’s advertising division, LG Ad Solutions, claims it can target 363 million “addressable secondary devices” across the United States. This statement further intensifies scrutiny regarding what data LG TVs are collecting.

An LG representative responded to queries with a statement clarifying that LG TVs can identify compatible devices on the network to facilitate features like device connectivity and smart home functionalities. However, the investigation using Wireshark, a network protocol analysis tool, uncovered that LG televisions are capable of gathering extensive user data. This includes the user’s IP address, geographic location, details about Wi-Fi networks nearby, and a comprehensive list of devices connected to the same network.

It remains uncertain whether this tracking capability is employed for purposes beyond targeted advertising, such as diagnostics, or if the information is sent to LG for further use. Nonetheless, the presence of such technology poses a risk to user privacy, particularly for unsuspecting customers who might not be aware of the extent of data collection occurring within their homes.

Editor’s Take

This development raises significant privacy implications for consumers using smart devices. As technology advances, understanding the extent of data collection becomes crucial for maintaining user trust. Companies must clarify how user data is utilized and ensure transparency to prevent misuse of personal information, particularly regarding sensitive data that could impact privacy.
