Medieval Manuscripts Unveil Insights into the Deadly Sheeppox Virus

The recent study revealing the presence of the sheeppox virus in ancient manuscripts has shed new light on the interplay between historical parchment production and animal diseases. Researchers conducted a detailed examination of medieval texts stored in various prestigious collections, including Yale University, Cambridge University, and Trinity College. These manuscripts range from the 15th-century Speculum Historiale to the 1,000-year-old York Gospels.

Uncovering Hidden Histories

By analyzing multiple pages from these manuscripts, scientists discovered traces of DNA from the sheeppox pathogen. This suggests that the animals used for parchment production were likely infected, indicating that outbreaks of this disease were common in medieval flocks. Notably, the study also found evidence of the virus on multiple types of parchment, such as that made from calfskin and goatskin, hinting at either cross-species infection or contamination during the parchment-making process.

The analysis extended beyond manuscripts, as the team also extracted DNA from ancient sheep teeth dating back to the Bronze Age in regions of Russia and Central Kazakhstan. This ancient DNA preserved in teeth can offer insights into diseases that affected these animals thousands of years ago.

Through careful comparison of ancient DNA sequences with those from the medieval period, researchers concluded that the sheeppox virus branched off from related viruses like goatpox and lumpy skin disease between 11,500 and 3,700 years ago. This timeline intriguingly aligns with the early domestication of livestock in Europe. In total, the team successfully recovered 21 ancient genomes from as far back as 1700 BCE to the early modern era.

Co-author Kevin G. Daly from University College Dublin emphasized the significance of this research, stating, “Parchment making has been considered a vanishing craft, but we are beginning to understand just how much of the past it has retained.” He added that the study illustrates how these ancient materials not only document cultural history but also encapsulate the health landscape of livestock during the medieval period. This interdisciplinary project showcases the importance of collaboration in scientific research.

The findings were published in the journal Science Advances, further opening the door to understanding historical animal diseases and their impacts on agriculture.
