A tragic incident occurred when a high-speed police chase ended in catastrophe, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old woman. Karen Joseph succumbed to her critical injuries after a collision with a black Audi pursued by police.
The harrowing event took place on Warwick Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, around 5:40 PM on August 24. Roman Kalas, a 19-year-old driving the Audi A3, collided with Ms. Joseph’s white Ford Puma. Kalas died at the scene due to severe head and chest trauma caused by the crash.
Ms. Joseph was quickly taken to the hospital but tragically passed away the following Friday. Her daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries during the accident.
The pursuit reportedly lasted about six minutes before the crash occurred. After reviewing dashcam footage, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed that the police initiated the chase with sirens and emergency lights after Kalas failed to stop when directed.
This incident comes on the heels of another tragedy in which two police officers lost their lives when a group of young men in a Volkswagen Passat collided with their vehicle while driving in the wrong direction down the A66 near Middlesbrough. The five individuals in the Passat also died on the spot.
IOPC Director Derrick Campbell expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends and everyone affected by the deaths of Roman Kalas and Karen Joseph.” He added that the families have been informed about the ongoing investigation and have requested privacy during this difficult time.
Inquests into the deaths of both Ms. Joseph and Mr. Kalas are scheduled to open tomorrow.
