Exploring Meta’s Initiative to Implement Robots in Data Centers
Meta is on a mission to integrate robotics into its operations, particularly in its data center facilities. The company is currently experimenting with various robotic technologies at its Altoona data center campus, which serves as a testing ground for new innovations.
According to sources, the inventory robots currently employed are considered too slow for optimal efficiency. While Meta previously considered utilizing drones as a potentially faster solution, this idea was ultimately abandoned.
Testing the Waters with Watney Robots
Since last June, Meta has been piloting a pair of dual-armed Watney robots designed for cabling tasks in one of its Altoona buildings. Though these machines require human supervision and are not yet as efficient as human workers, initial findings suggest they hold significant promise for future deployments.
The Watney robotics startup had originally showcased a laundry-folding prototype that also had janitorial applications. The company made a strategic shift to focus on robotics tailored for data center environments early last year.
In addition to Altoona, Meta is testing various robots at its newest data center campus, Prometheus, located in New Albany, Ohio. Among these are four-wheeled robots equipped with scissor-lift features and six-axis arms built by the automation expert ABB. Currently, these robots are engaged in reseating parts, with future potential for reduced human involvement.
However, the transition to robotic labor is not without challenges. Experts like Helen Oleynikova, CEO of Exclaim Robotics, caution that despite numerous trials and demonstrations, a clear functional solution has yet to emerge.
Within Meta’s facilities, some employees have expressed concerns about downtime, as the robots require regular battery recharges. Additionally, Meta acknowledges that these robots are not yet suitable for demanding tasks, such as the intricate cabling needed for the Nvidia GB300 supercomputer. A former employee commented, “Things have been designed for human hands forever to make everything a five-minute repair,” highlighting the need for redesigns that will take time.
Nonetheless, efforts to prepare the robots for increasingly complex tasks continue.
