One Nation Achieves Historic By-Election Victory in Western Australia

One Nation has achieved a significant milestone in Western Australia, securing its inaugural seat in the lower house of the state parliament. Candidate Luke Herdegen triumphed over Labor’s Georgia Tree in the recent Secret Harbour by-election, garnering a robust 57.04% of the two-candidate preferred vote.

This historic win marks the first time that Pauline Hanson‘s One Nation party has claimed a seat in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, reflecting the party’s ambitions to broaden its influence across state and territory governments.

The results underscore a notable shift in voter sentiment, particularly as Labor’s primary vote plummeted to 24%, a stark decline from the 46% recorded during the 2025 WA state election. In contrast, One Nation saw its primary vote rise to 39%, up by 30% compared to the previous election cycle. The Liberal Party also demonstrated a decrease, with a primary vote of 17%, down 7% from 2025.

Hanson remarked that this outcome illustrates One Nation’s capability to challenge Labor in districts where the Liberal Party has historically struggled. “One Nation has taken a seat where the Liberals have never been able to challenge Labor,” she stated.

Herdegen declared that there were ‘no safe Labor seats’ in WA or Australia anymore.

Following his victory, Herdegen asserted that the results indicate that there are “no safe Labor seats in [WA] or in this country anymore.” The outcome has reverberated throughout Labor, especially given the long-held belief that the outer Perth seat was secure for them.
