Tributes Paid to ‘Sweet’ Sussex Student Who Drowned with Parents at Beach

Tragedy Strikes Shoreham-by-Sea: Family Drowns During Beach Outing

A 14-year-old girl, Sara El-Khawas, who tragically lost her life alongside her parents in the waters of Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, has been remembered by her school community as a cherished and well-liked individual.

Sara, along with her parents Hassan El-Khawas, 55, and Zeina Alayn, 37, drowned while swimming in choppy sea conditions around 3 PM yesterday. Their younger daughter, Saja, is currently hospitalized and reported to be in critical condition.

The family, British citizens of Palestinian descent, had relocated to the UK over a decade ago from the Rashidieh Camp situated in southern Lebanon, according to the Palestinian embassy.

Having travelled from their home in north-west London, the family was enjoying a day at the beach when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls issued a heartfelt tribute to Sara, expressing sorrow over the loss of their Year 8 student. A spokesperson shared, “It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death of Sara, a sweet girl who was beloved by both her peers and teachers. Our condolences go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.”

Floral tributes have been placed at the beach in memory of the family, who were described by neighbors as a warm and close-knit unit. One neighbor noted, “They were a lovely family, always smiling and friendly. It’s devastating to think of what has happened.”

Eyewitness reports suggest that tragedy may have struck when one of the children became entangled in a fishing net, prompting immediate rescue efforts from a local fisherman. Eight ambulances responded to the scene as emergency services rushed to assist.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident but preliminary assessments indicate it was a tragic accident without any third-party involvement.

In a statement, the Palestinian Forum in Britain expressed their condolences and called for support for the surviving family member. “With hearts believing in God’s decree, we mourn the loss of Mr. Hossam El-Khawas, his wife, and daughter. We pray for the recovery of their second daughter and urge the community to come together in support.”
