Stripe Set to Acquire AI Gateway Startup OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion
Stripe has successfully negotiated an acquisition deal for OpenRouter, a significant player in the AI sector, as reported by Bloomberg. This transaction is valued at over $7 billion.
OpenRouter specializes in helping clients navigate a variety of AI models tailored to their unique needs and financial constraints. Recently, the company disclosed it had secured $113 million in a Series B funding round, boosting its valuation to approximately $1.3 billion. This fundraising round attracted notable investors such as Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.
In a previous announcement, OpenRouter‘s CEO, Alex Atallah, referred to the firm as the “Stripe for AI.” He emphasized that the platform facilitates access to various AI systems while mitigating the risks of vendor lock-in. Currently, the startup boasts a user base of over 8 million globally and provides access to more than 400 AI models.
Following media speculation last month regarding the potential acquisition, The Wall Street Journal confirmed that talks between Stripe and OpenRouter were underway. Now, with a finalized agreement in place, the acquisition is poised to enhance Stripe‘s offerings in the AI landscape.
A representative from Stripe commented to TechCrunch that the company does not engage in discussions regarding rumors or speculative news.
