Recently, the autonomous vehicle known as DevBot #1 made its mark at the Formula E Marrakech ePrix, showcasing its capabilities on a city street track.
This battery-operated prototype is undergoing trials as part of Roborace, a planned competition featuring autonomous cars racing on temporary circuits through urban settings.
“This marks the first instance where the Devbot operated in driverless mode on a Formula E track situated within a city,” stated Justin Cooke from Roborace in an interview with CNN.
He expressed his excitement, noting, “The dedication from the team has been remarkable; many have been working late into the night to create technology capable of operating at this level and complexity.”
The vehicle employs a suite of sensors, including GPS, radar, and ultrasonic systems, all integrated with advanced algorithms to navigate the racing track while avoiding obstacles.
“We are at the cutting edge of technology. It feels akin to a space race. While some venture to Mars, we are pioneering robotic vehicles, making this one of the most thrilling areas in technology today,” Cooke remarked, also representing Kinetik, the investment firm supporting the initiative.
Following a successful 30-minute test run in Marrakech, which coincided with the UN climate change conference (COP22), Cooke announced plans for upcoming trials involving head-to-head races with multiple cars, aiming for as many as ten vehicles to compete during each Formula E event.
“Being part of COP22, which celebrates an electric and autonomous future, provides the perfect backdrop for Roborace,” Cooke enthused.
